The Science of Red Light

Why ILYEO™ body Works

Red light therapy only works if enough light energy actually reaches the tissue that hurts. ILYEO body is engineered around that one fact: precision wavelength, concentrated power, and direct skin contact, delivering a measured, lab-tested dose in a single 10-minute session.

Midlife doesn't pause for recovery time. ILYEO body was built to fit into the life that doesn't stop, not the other way around.

Why Red Light Works

Red light therapy works by giving your cells more energy to repair themselves. The clinical term is photobiomodulation: specific wavelengths of red light are absorbed by mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside your cells, prompting them to release more ATP (the fuel your cells run on) and nitric oxide (which supports local blood flow).

How it works, in three steps:

  1. Light in: 662 nm red light reaches the skin, muscle, and joint tissue.
  2. Absorbed: Mitochondria, the cell's power source, absorb the light.
  3. Energy up: ATP production rises, local circulation improves, collagen and protein synthesis are supported, and inflammation settles.

That process is how red light helps temporarily relieve minor muscle and joint pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms.

How Deep Does Red Light Go?

Red light needs to reach past the skin's surface to work, and 662 nm is the wavelength that does it. ILYEO body's precision 662 nm light passes through the epidermis and dermis, through subcutaneous fat, and down into the muscle and joint tissue below, roughly 6 mm and deeper, where mitochondria absorb it.

This is delivered through 12 high-powered LEDs in direct skin contact, so the light doesn't lose strength crossing an air gap before it reaches you.

In one 10-minute session, ILYEO body delivers:

  • 662 nm precision red light, nothing else
  • Up to 28 J/cm: total light energy delivered
  • Up to 47 mW/cm² average irradiance

Why Dose Matters More Than LED Count

More LEDs on a device does not mean more effective therapy. Tissue doesn't respond to how many lights a panel has; it responds to how much usable energy actually reaches it. A large panel can look impressive and still spread its energy so thin that the specific spot that hurts only receives a fraction of it.

Think of it like skincare: a long ingredient list doesn't tell you the concentration of the active ingredient. What matters with red light is how much energy actually reaches the source of pain, not how many diodes are on the device.

Two ways to deliver red light:

  • Spread thin (large panel): energy is diluted across a wide area, so the tissue that actually hurts gets only a fraction of it.
  • Concentrated (ILYEO body): a real, quantified dose delivered straight into the tissue that is actually hurting, via 12 high-powered LEDs in direct contact with the skin.

ILYEO body is intentionally engineered with fewer, more powerful LEDs rather than the largest LED count possible, because the goal is effective dose delivered to the treatment site, not surface-area coverage.

Not All Red Light Is Equal

A device can emit red light and still deliver too little of it to do anything. What separates an effective red light device from an ineffective one is the energy that actually lands on the treatment area, measured in joules per square centimeter (J/cm²).

Red light energy delivered to the treatment area, per session:

  • Most at-home red light devices: a trickle, often below the threshold where a meaningful dose begins
  • ILYEO body: up to 28 J/cm², independently lab-tested, at or above where a meaningful dose begins
  • In-office clinical devices: clinic-strength output

ILYEO body was engineered to close that gap: clinic-level output, delivered at home, directly on the spot that hurts.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

Wavelength, irradiance, and joules per square centimeter each measure something different, and all three have to be right for red light therapy to work.

  • Wavelength (662 nm) is the exact color of light your cells absorb best. ILYEO body's 662 nm ± 5 nm sits inside that absorption peak; light outside that narrow band is absorbed far less efficiently and does less.
  • Irradiance (up to 47 mW/cm²) is how strong the light is at the skin's surface, or how fast the energy arrives. Think of it as how hard the light is pouring.
  • Joules per square centimeter (up to 28 J/cm²) is the total energy delivered over the full session, or how much you collect by the end. Think of it as how full the glass gets.

You need the right wavelength, delivered with enough irradiance, for long enough, to add up to a meaningful dose. If any one of those is off, the results can fall short, regardless of how the device is marketed.

Built for Real Dose, Not Just a Red Glow

ILYEO body was engineered around one question: how much red light energy actually reaches the tissue that hurts, not how many LEDs are on the device or how large the panel looks.

What that looks like in the device itself:

  • 12 high-powered LEDs at 662 nm ± 5 nm, delivered in direct skin contact
  • Up to 28 J/cm² of red-light energy in a single 10-minute session*
  • Up to 47 mW/cm² average irradiance, independently lab-tested
  • Compact, flexible, medical-grade silicone pad that conforms to the body, with no latex, phthalates, or BPA
  • Cordless, rechargeable, hands-free, with an adjustable 57 cm strap
  • Third-party tested to IEC medical electrical and photobiological safety standards
  • Bluetooth-connected, with the free ILYEO app for guided placement, session tracking, and pain tracking

* For darker skin tones: start at two minutes and gradually ramp up treatment time as your skin adjusts.

"We didn't set out to win an LED-counting contest. We engineered ILYEO body around the number that actually matters, the energy that reaches the tissue, so people get a real, measured dose in a session that fits into a busy day."

FAQ: Red Light Therapy & ILYEO body

What wavelength does ILYEO body use, and why does it matter?

ILYEO body uses 662 nm ± 5 nm red light. Research shows this wavelength sits inside the range mitochondria absorb most efficiently, so light at or near 662 nm is able to reach and effectively signal cells in muscle and joint tissue. Wavelengths outside that narrow band are absorbed far less efficiently and do less.

Is more LEDs better for red light therapy?

No. LED count is a marketing number, not a performance number. Tissue responds to the energy that actually reaches it (measured in J/cm² and mW/cm²), not to how many diodes are on a panel. A device with fewer, more powerful LEDs in direct skin contact can deliver a stronger, more concentrated dose than a panel with hundreds of LEDs spread over a large surface area.

How is ILYEO body different from a large red light panel?

A large panel spreads its total energy across a wide surface area, so any single spot, like an aching knee or shoulder, only receives a fraction of the device's total output. ILYEO body concentrates 12 high-powered LEDs in direct contact with the treatment area, delivering up to 28 J/cm² directly to the tissue that hurts in one 10-minute session.

How much energy does ILYEO body deliver, and how is that measured?

ILYEO body delivers up to 28 J/cm² of red-light energy per 10-minute session, with an average irradiance of up to 47 mW/cm², independently lab-tested. Irradiance measures how strong the light is at the skin's surface; joules per square centimeter measure the total energy delivered over the full session.

How does red light therapy work in the body?

Red light is absorbed by mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside cells. This is believed to increase ATP (the fuel cells run on) and nitric oxide (which supports local blood flow), which is how red light therapy is understood to temporarily relieve minor muscle and joint pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms, and temporarily increase local blood circulation.

How deep does ILYEO body's red light penetrate?

ILYEO body's 662 nm light is designed to pass through the epidermis and dermis and subcutaneous fat to reach muscle and joint tissue, generally 6 mm and deeper, where it can be absorbed by mitochondria in that tissue. Actual depth varies by treatment site.

How long is an ILYEO body session, and how often can I use it?

Each session is 10 minutes* per treatment area. ILYEO body is cordless, rechargeable, and hands-free, and pairs with the free ILYEO app for guided placement and session tracking.

* For darker skin tones: start at two minutes and gradually ramp up treatment time as your skin adjusts.
