Red Light vs. Infrared vs. Laser: What Really Matters?
Why Joylux chose deep red light and why wavelength, power, and dose matter more than buzzwords.
If you’ve shopped for a red-light device lately, you’ve probably seen some impressive claims. Infrared penetrates deeper. Lasers are more powerful. More LEDs and more colors mean better results.
But do they?
Not all light-based devices are created equal. And the technology with the most impressive sounding name isn’t necessarily the one that delivers the best results. At Joylux, we believe you shouldn’t need a science degree to understand what you’re buying. You should know what kind of light your device produces and how much of it actually reaches your body.
Red Light vs. Infrared: Is Deeper Always Better?
Deep red light (600–700 nm) has been studied for decades for its ability to stimulate a process called photobiomodulation. That’s a big word for something pretty simple: certain wavelengths of light help switch on the natural processes your cells use to keep your body healthy.
Think of it as giving your cells a boost to do what they’re already designed to do. Red light interacts with the mitochondria, the energy-producing centers inside your cells, and supports some remarkable functions:
- Cellular energy (ATP): Helping your cells produce the energy they need to maintain and repair tissue.
- Blood flow: Supporting circulation that brings oxygen and nutrients where your body needs them.
- Collagen and elastin: Supporting the proteins that help keep skin firm, elastic, and healthy.
- Inflammation: Helping regulate inflammatory responses associated with pain and recovery.
Near-infrared light is invisible to the eye. Certain near-infrared wavelengths can travel farther into tissue than visible red light. Infrared can also stimulate photobiomodulation, while some infrared treatments create warmth depending on the wavelength and intensity. But deeper doesn’t automatically mean better. What matters is choosing the right light for the job and delivering the right amount of it.
Why Joylux Chose 662 nm Deep Red Light
Why 662 nm? Because it’s in a sweet spot of the red-light spectrum that has been extensively studied for its ability to activate cellular energy processes. This is where red light does some of its most important work of supporting cellular energy, circulation, and the body’s natural repair processes.
We didn’t choose 662 nm by accident. We chose it because of the science behind it. Rather than adding wavelengths just to make a product sound more advanced, we focus on delivering a meaningful, measured dose of deep red light directly to the treatment area.
The right light, delivered at the right dose, matters more than the number of wavelengths on the box.
Why We Combine Red Light With Heat and Vibration
With ILYEO™ body, light is only part of the experience. Three complementary technologies work together:
- Deep red-light: Delivers targeted light energy where you place the device.
- Therapeutic heat: Increases local circulation and provides soothing warmth to help relieve stiffness and discomfort.
- Gentle vibration: Adds a soothing massage-like sensation. Research on mechanical stimulation also shows how vibration can activate fibroblasts, the cells involved in producing collagen and maintaining connective tissue. Paired with red light, the technologies work through complementary pathways.
Together, they create a hands-free approach to everyday muscle and joint pain relief. Direct skin contact. No complicated setup. Just a 10-minute treatment at home.
LED vs. Laser: Is a Laser Really Better?
The word laser sounds powerful. It brings to mind medical technology and professional treatments. But here’s what many consumers don’t realize: a laser isn’t automatically more effective than an LED for red-light therapy.
Lasers produce highly focused light. LEDs produce light that can be spread out or directed with a lens. Both can be used for photobiomodulation. And here’s where marketing gets confusing: some products sold under laser-related names actually use LED light sources with lenses to focus the light.
We use focusing technology in our vFit® device, too. But we don’t call it a laser, because it isn’t one.
For at-home red-light therapy, the important questions are what wavelength the device uses, how much light it delivers, what area it treats, and whether there’s evidence behind the treatment. Don’t pay a premium for the word ‘laser.’ Understand what the device actually delivers.
What About Professional Laser Treatments?
Professional in-office lasers are a different category. Many use concentrated energy to create controlled changes in tissue and can produce results in skin resurfacing and wrinkle reduction that at-home red-light devices aren’t designed to replicate.
They can also involve multiple appointments, downtime, and costs running into thousands of dollars. At-home red-light therapy serves a different purpose: making well-designed light-based treatments accessible and convenient for everyday use, at a fraction of the cost.
We’re Not Just Another Red-Light Brand
Joylux has invested years and millions of dollars developing our own technology. We own our intellectual property and engineer our products around specific treatment goals. We don’t simply buy a generic device, put our logo on it, and call it innovation.
Every decision, from wavelength to optical power to session length, is intentional. That’s the difference between selling red-light devices and engineering red-light therapy.
The Numbers That Matter: Power and Dose
You can buy a device with dozens of LEDs, multiple colors, or an impressive-sounding laser name. But those features don’t tell you how much light energy it actually delivers. Here are the three numbers worth knowing:
- Wavelength (nm): What kind of light is it? Joylux products use 662 nm deep red light.
- Optical power and irradiance: How much light does it put out, and how concentrated is it over the treatment area? ILYEO body production testing measures approximately 800 mW of total optical power and an average irradiance of 47 mW/cm². vFit+ delivers up to approximately 1,400 mW of total optical power, with average irradiance around 40 mW/cm².
- Energy density (J/cm²): How much light energy is delivered over a session? ILYEO body delivers up to approximately 28 J/cm² over 10 minutes; vFit delivers up to approximately 23 J/cm² over 12 minutes.
Sounds high-tech? It doesn’t have to be. Wavelength tells you what light you’re getting. Optical power tells you how much the device produces. And dose tells you how much light energy is delivered over time.
The dose matters. Too little light may not do much; too much can reduce the benefit. That’s why Joylux designs wavelength, output, treatment area, and session length together. Power determines what a device can deliver. Proper dosing makes that power count.
If a Brand Won’t Share Its Numbers, Ask Why
Here’s something every red-light company should answer: How much light energy does your device actually deliver?
Not how many LEDs it has. Not how many colors it produces. And not how many watts it pulls from the wall. How much light is actually reaching your body?
If a company won’t disclose its optical power, irradiance, or treatment dose, how are you supposed to compare what you’re buying? Missing numbers don’t automatically mean a device is ineffective. But they do mean you can’t make an informed comparison.
At Joylux, we believe transparency should be the standard, not the exception. That’s why we share our performance measurements. When you’ve invested in engineering powerful, precisely dosed red-light technology, you should be proud to show the numbers.
The Bottom Line: Better Technology Isn’t About Bigger Claims
Infrared isn’t automatically better than red light. A laser isn’t automatically better than an LED. And more lights, more wavelengths, or a higher price tag don’t necessarily mean better results.
What matters is choosing the right wavelength, delivering a measured dose, and designing the treatment around a real purpose. That’s the Joylux approach: deep red light, thoughtful engineering, and complementary heat and vibration, made for real life.
You deserve more than impressive marketing claims. You deserve to know what’s behind the light.
