We care about every stage of your leaking life. From first periods to postpartum, bladder leaks to discharge - it is important to discuss all stages of life, which is why we are happy to talk about all things menopause for Menopause Awareness Month this October.

Maybe you are the person who knows exactly what to expect at every stage of your life, and maybe you are someone who learns as you go. Whichever person you may be, we want to ensure that you have access to the information when you need it!

Let’s start with the basics. Did you know that there are three different stages of menopause that each come with their own signs and symptoms? Here is a bit about each:

  1. Perimenopause - This is the stage where the ovaries have started decreasing estrogen production. This stage can occur for 8-10 years and generally starts in one’s early 40s. A person will still ovulate and have a period during this stage, though menopausal symptoms will also have begun.
  2. Menopause - The body has reached menopause when the ovaries have stopped producing estrogen and are no longer ovulating. This is diagnosable when you have not experienced a period in 12 consecutive months.
  3. Postmenopause - A person will have reached this stage when they have not had a period for an entire year. This is when menopausal symptoms will often be alleviated, though others may still experience them over time.

You may have heard of some of the more general symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, but there are other symptoms one can experience during this time! According to the Cleveland Clinic, some of the more common symptoms are:

  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Urinary urgency
  • Hot flashes
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Emotional changes
  • Dry skin, eyes, or mouth
  • Breast tenderness
  • Worsening PMS symptoms
  • Irregular periods

Other symptoms you may experience are headaches and other aches and pains, weight gain, and changes in libido.

One of the many frustrating challenges of perimenopause are irregular periods. It may have been months since your last cycle, so you think you are safe. However, you are now sitting at lunch and feel that familiar rush but have no supplies on hand (because, well, you haven’t had to deal with this in months and thought you were done). We are thrilled to introduce you to an amazing team of women who have created a brilliant alternative.

Meet Saalt. Cherie, the CEO & Co-founder, started Saalt after a conversation with her aunt in Venezuela, where pads and tampons hadn’t been readily available at stores in years. She created brilliant options that are reusable, natural, and easy to use. These options include a Saalt Menstrual Cup or Saalt Menstrual Disc, which many of us are not yet familiar with. Because it collects rather than absorbs your flow, it can make for a more comfortable fit during the stages of menopause. Since vaginal dryness is a common symptom, products such as tampons can contribute to this as they are absorbing not only menstrual flow, but also other vaginal lubrication. Cups and discs, however, do not contribute to vaginal dryness and are a convenient product to grab and go if you unexpectedly start. Plus, it can be hard to predict how heavy or light your flow will be, so having access to a product that you can safely wear for up to 12 hours gives you the freedom to go out and live your life with confidence. Plus, with one period product that can last up to 10 years with proper use and care, you can use the money you would be spending on tampons and pads for something a little more fun. A facial, a massage, a new pair of sneakers - the choices are endless.

What is a menstrual cup? It’s a reusable soft silicone cup worn internally like a tampon that collects, rather than absorbs, your period.

How do menstrual cups work? A Saalt Cup is inserted like a tampon but collects rather than absorbs your flow. It sits in the vaginal canal, and when inserted properly, you won't even notice it's there.

Why Saalt cups? They have 3-4x the capacity of regular tampons, you can wear them for 12 hours- day or night, one saalt cup lasts for ten years, 1 cup saves 3,000 pads and tampons from landfills, and 91% of first-time users never go back.

And if you have any questions or are not sure what products would be best for you, just reach out to Saalt’s team of super knowledgeable Saalt Coaches. They are always happy to take all your TMI and turn it into the perfect product recommendations for you.

At any stage of your life, it is important to have the information and tools you need to be as comfortable and confident as you can. Which is why we are so happy to be partnering with Saalt this month. You can use the code JOYLUX on Saalt.com for 15% off your order and join the Leakproof life!
